Three Dimensions of Expression:
Mind on Clay Matter
September 5 – November 2, 2008
James Tanner, Curator
FREE Opening Reception: Friday, September 12, 5-8pm |
This exhibit features three prominent artists working in sculptural clay. Victor Spinski, one of the founders of the trompe l’oeil movement in clay, Joe Bova who creates magical imagery and realism in clay and Roy Strassberg who imbues feeling into the clay with his social and political commentary on the human condition.
“Each artist was selected because of the way they bring their mind to the clay matter and give it voice,” states curator James. L. Tanner. |

Inside/Inside Out: A Profile of Awareness
James L. Tanner Solo Exhibition
September 5 - November 2, 2008
David & Jacqueline Charak Gallery
FREE Opening Reception: Friday, September 12, 5-8pm |
"I use the human image of the face as a vehicle to suggest
psychological, emotional and spiritual being beneath the surface of a
masked landscape. I envision and build these images from an aerial
perspective that is naturally meditative. These images seem to come
from the sky. They are projected by the sky onto the landscape.
The soft geometry that characterizes my work is influenced by
architectural structure (both manmade and natural) and drawing. The
energy expressed in this work is about the love and excitement I feel
for life and all of the forms it takes. I am most influenced by nature." |
Hand Over Hand:
New Work by Michael Shaughnessy
September 19, 2008- January 11, 2009
FREE Opening Reception: Friday, September 19, 6-9pm |
 |
Shaughnessy’s use of hay as a medium springs, in part, from its capacity to evoke powerful associations with food, bedding and shelter. The notions of reuse and regeneration are integral to Shaughnessy’s working processes and philosophy, and are inherent in the work itself. |

About the Craft Alliance Exhibition Gallery
The Craft Alliance Exhibition Gallery features the one-of-a-kind
work of contemporary craft artists in 6-8 themed exhibitions per year.
Professional curators are selected to identify themes relevant to contemporary
craft, and create exhibitions including artists whose work demonstrates
the highest quality, most powerful pieces being made today.
Each exhibition consists of 12-20 artists, both emerging and established
in their careers. Gallery talks by the curators are held at our openings
for the general public. Whenever possible, studio workshops accompany
the exhibitions.
Our Exhibition Gallery welcomes over 35,000 visitors per year, including
student groups of all ages. Our Exhibition Program allows us to educate
and inspire our community with fine contemporary craft of the highest
quality.
The Craft Alliance Exhibition Series is funded with
the support of the Regional Arts Commission, the Arts & Education
Council, the Whitaker Foundation, and the Missouri Arts Council, a
state agency.
